The 39 Steps

Robert Donat as Richard Hannay in Hitchcock's 1935 film adaptation.

Rupert Penry-Jones, the new Richard Hannay.

Good news from TV land as the BBC have announced they'll be remaking the classic novel The 39 Steps in time for the Christmas holidays. A book that was so good I read it in one day. Rupert Penry-Jones will be taking on the role of Richard Hannay, who has to avoid all kinds of baddies and enemy spies as he flees across the country. Watch out for the man with the missing finger. If you want to read the book, it's available for free online here. The Guardian's article on the new BBC version is here.

"I'm glad you taught me to speak so I could say that."

It's no wonder they gave Daniel Day-Lewis an Oscar for this - they should give him another one every year for his portrayal of Christy Brown, who became a successful author and painter despite suffering from cerebral palsy. IMDB

Half A World Away - R.E.M.

Like a lot of videos on this blog, today's mid-week music selection is from R.E.M. - back in 1991, they released their seventh album, called Out of Time. It spent 183 weeks on the British album charts, and this was the 8th track on it. The song was never released as a single, but R.E.M. decided to make a video for it anyway, which eventually appeared on the compilation This Film Is On. It was directed by Jim McKay and the actor is Tom Gilroy. The song also has the distinction of once appearing in Scrubs.
